چکیده

Precipitate-free Fe-Cr-Ni f.c.c. alloys exhibit strong intergranular corrosion in acid solutions at electrochemical potentials from the transpassivity range. Segregation of impurity atoms to grain boundaries is generally considered to be responsible for this specific kind of localized damage. A study of the influence of silicon, phosphon~s and carbon on the intergranular transpassive corrosion of the solution treated Fe17Cr-13Ni alloy in the 2N sulphuric acid at a fixed electrochemical potential is presented. No localized attack occurs in a high purity base alloy nor in one containing phosphorus. The amount of intergranular corrosion is determined by the silicon content: according to previous results a ~naximum is observed for about 1 wt.% (2 at.%) Si. Carbon additions between 100 and 200 ppm cause some intergranular corrosion in silicon-free alloys and amplify the corrosion intensity in those containing silicon. No localized corrosion occurs for silicon contents higher than 2 wt%. An analysis of the segregation kinetics of silicon is presented and the relation between intergranular corrosion and bulk silicon concentration is discussed.

How to make N2 listen to you in steel making!

All steels contain some amount of dissolved gases such as oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen of which nitrogen is effective in improving the mechanical and corrosion properties of stainless steels if it remains in solid solution or precipitates as very fine and coherent nitrides or carbo-nitrides with iron or alloying elements. When nitrogen is added to austenitic steels it can simultaneously improv...

High-Temperature Behaviour of Austenitic Alloys -Influence of Temperature and Strain Rate on Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Development

The global increase in energy consumption and the global warming from greenhouse gas emission creates the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Biomass power plants with higher efficiency could generate more energy but also reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, e.g. CO2. Biomass is the largest global contributor to renewable energy and offers no net contribution o...

Acoustic Emission during Stress Corrosion Cracking Test

AE monitoring from various types of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been conducted for the past 15 years in our laboratory. This paper discusses AE results of active-path dissolution-type SCC of austenitic stainless steel in chloride solution and fused salt, fluoride and polythionic acid solutions, brass in ammonia (Mattosson's solution), and carbon steels in nitrite solution. Transgranular...
